Banana production by Chiquita in Panama may be coming to a close after 130 years of production.

There are many different species of banana and plantain, and most of them have a better flavour and nutritional qualities than the cultivated species, Musa acuminata. The food distributors and markets in high-income countries have driven down the cost/quality of bananas to such an extent that workers on the farms can barely make a living. Indeed, you can purchase bananas at a lower cost in Europe than you can in Panama. As a consequence, the massive medical benefits from bananas have been missed. This is a huge missed opportunity for the industry and public health

80% of the world has no water or wastewater treatment; banana and plantain cultivation in wetland/drainage systems makes a very powerful water treatment system. Even the by-products from production can be used to treat wastewater and river systems such as the Amazon.

We need to practice sustainable regenerative agriculture, pay workers a proper wage and bring back the quality and nutrition of the food we need.
